Call for Participation -- CPGIS 2008 Heilongjiang Geomatics Workshop

Background

As an important technology in the 21st century, GIS has emerged to be one of the mainstream domains in the IT industry, being widely utilized in many different fields ranging from environment management to our daily life. To facilitate the development of GIS industries, the Heilongjiang geomatics industry park (HGIP) was established by the Heilongjiang provincial government and Heilongjiang Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (HLJBSM) through the 11th five-year plan of the Heilongjiang province. With collaboration among CPGIS, HLJBSM, and George Mason Univ., a workshop will be held in HGIP, with an aim to introduce advanced GIS technologies to the GIS professionals in Heilongjiang. This workshop will also be part of series celebration activities for the Fiftieth Anniversary of HLJBSM.

We invite oversea CPGIS scholars to participate in the workshop to be held in Harbin in July 2008. The purpose of the workshop is to encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas between overseas and domestic GIS professionals on the advancement of GIS technologies and the promotion of GIS applications in Heilongjiang province.

Time: July 1-2, 2008
Duration: Two days
Places: Heilongjiang Geomatics Industry Park, Harbin
Activities: Each participant will give a presentation. Follow-up discussion will be arranged between CPGIS scholars and domestic professionals.

Expenses:
Domestic travel expenses (including round-trip tickets to Harbin, local travel expenses, food and lodging at Harbin) will be covered by HLJBSM. Participants should arrange their own international travels to/from China.

Call for Participation
If you are interested in participating in this project, please prepare an abstract with 250 words. The abstract should provide a succinct description of the presentation to be delivered. The following GIS application areas are of particular interest.

Transportation
Land change and land cover
Forest fire management
Environment, such as pollution, disasters, and rapid response
Urban planning
International GIS industry

Call for Extended Abstracts -- Cyberinfrastructure, Due 3/31/2008


Based on the AAG 2008 Cyberinfrastructure (CI) sessions, we plan to publish a special issue of the journal of Computers, Environment and Urban Systems on CI.

We invite you to submit an extended abstract (including title, authors, introduction, methodology/approaches, experiments, conclusion, and references) within 1000 words to Ms. Xiaotang Zhou (xzhou8@gmu.edu) by Mar.31, 2008. Figures and tables should be limited to two each. Based on a brief review, ten will be invited to submit full papers, of which 6-8 will be selected for publishing based on peer review.

We may also publish a proceeding of the extended abstracts if we received a good number and quality of the extended abstracts.

Please submit by Mar.31, 2008.

CALL for Summer ACGIS Host in Los Angles, CA Aug. 18-21, 2008

According to the MOU/agreements signed among HeiLongJiang Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (HLJBSM), George Mason University (GMU), and CPGIS, we plan to have the "Advanced Certificate of GeoInformation Science" program again at GMU but extend to multiple sites including Houston/Texas, Boulder/Denver/CO, and Los Angles/California.

The program will be hosted at GMU for 4 weeks, and one week in each of Houston, Boulder, and Los Angles (LA). We will need a host in Los Angles from Aug. 18-21, 2008. The responsibility includes 1) identifying a classroom for about 26 participants, 2) inviting instructors and scheduling four-hour lectures for the four days (two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon for each day). The sponsors will provide funding to cover the organizing cost and honorarium for the instructors.

We invite you to host the four-day instructing activities at LA. Please email by April 15, 2008 to Dr. Chaowei Yang at cyang3@gmu.edu about 1) host organization, 2) tentative planning lectures, 3) organizing cost and honorarium for instructors, 4) any other relevant information. Please feel free to contact Dr. Yang if you need more information.

CALL for Lecturers Jul. 7- Aug. 21, 2008

According to the MOU/agreements signed among HeiLongJiang Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (HLJBSM), George Mason University (GMU), and CPGIS, we plan to have the "Advanced Certificate of GeoInformation Science" program again at GMU but extend to multiple sites including Houston/Texas, Boulder/Denver/CO, and Los Angles/California.
The program will last for 7 weeks (July 7 – August 21, 2007) and includes the following topics: 1) Observation the Earth and Disasters, 2) Spatial Statistics, 3) Advanced GeoInformation Science, 4) Distributed GIS, 5) Frontiers of GeoInformation Technology, and other relevant topics organized by each site.
Besides regular lectures given by instructors, we invite you to apply to the GeoInformation Science Fellowship to give lectures for 4-8 hours. Sponsors will provide funding to cover travel expenses.
Interested ones should email applications by April 15, 2008 to Dr. Chaowei Yang @ cyang3@gmu.edu. The application should be no more than 2 pages and includes 1) title of proposed lecture, 2) brief description of proposed lecture, 3) which topic(s) does your lecture fit into, 4) amount of travel expenses requested, 5) relevant project (s) worked on, and 6) your time availability.
Applications will be peer-reviewed based on the 6 aspects and selected applications will be announced by May 1, 2008. Up to seven will be selected according to application pool, quality, time, and fitness to the topics and availability of funding. Selected applicants will give lectures in one of the four sites.

Call for Registration-- 2008 Geography Faculty Development Alliance Workshop

Registration has begun for the 2008 Geography Faculty Development Alliance Workshop at the University of Colorado at Boulder. It will be held at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 15-21 June.

This is the first time participants will be covering the costs of the workshop and we need a minimum of 22 people to cover costs. We are hoping that the registration fee will be covered in whole or part by participants' home departments and colleges. A discounted fee is available for participants wishing to make their own housing arrangements in Boulder.

Registration this year is through the AAG website at http://aag.org/GFDA/earlycareer.htm . It is not necessary to be a member of the Association of American Geographers to register for the workshop and enter the website. The registration fee of $1,250 ($1,150 before 25 April) includes a single dorm room, breakfasts, lunches & refreshments, two dinners, supplies, meeting rooms, computer network and printing access, graduate student support staff, and support for the workshops and teaching staff leaders.
